The Boho Chic Thobe

carole August 31st 2008

The girls at Jasmine Box in Jeddah have created a set of boho thobes just in time for Ramdan. Frankly, I think they would do great for a party in Tangiers or a late summer weekend in Mykonos or Ibiza....

The Benaki Museum of Islamic Art

The Polyglot August 31st 2008
A look inside Athens’ Benaki Museum of Islamic Art:  How one European institution has been quietly exhibiting its precious trove from the Middle East for close to a century.

September 11th had one unlikely effect on the art world: a reawakened interest in the West for art and culture emanating from the Middle East.  A trend seen throughout Europe, where significant collections of Islamic art, hidden away in the basements of some of the West’s grandest museums, are reemerging from years of obscurity.

Beijing Experience

Rasha August 21st 2008
I landed in Beijing last night after 20 hours journey time from London, with a transit stop in Dubai where I continued the remaining leg of the journey with my father. I was already super excited about the opportunity to come to Beijing (my 1st visit) to see the Olympics when, to my increased excitement, Pele was sitting one row in front of me!!!! A real great sports man sitting, or mor like, just chilling, right in front of me.

It's the Keyboard Stupid!

nancy August 18th 2008
Have you ever found yourself trying to search the Arabic web without an Arabic keyboard? It’s pretty much impossible. Not all laptops or computers necessarily come with Arabic support, and not all of us can necessarily type very well in Arabic. Enter Yamli – the brainchild of Lebanese entrepreneurs Habib Haddad and Imad Jureidini.

Bye bye Youssef and Mahmoud

carole August 14th 2008
First, it was the great filmmaker Youssef Chahine that bid adieu last month. With Chahine, it was the end of an era that passed away. Throughout his great cinematographic career, Chahine had offered us another norm for the Middle East: a place where different religions would live side by side and where injustice and small-mindedness were singled out. It was the Arab world he had known growing up in Alexandria in the 20s and 30s. Perhaps because I shared this vision for our part of the world, I wrote my MA thesis on the life and movies of Youssef Chahine.

Rasha August 12th 2008

I was surfing through different fashion websites and found myself on sephora.com when i read "lash pimping" - i don't really like make up too much, but always love to dress up my eyelashes - i have a pair of gold eyelashes, a diamond encrusted pair (a gift from a friend), a mutlicolored pair..and so, when i read the title, i had to find out more.

Alexandria's Hidden Gem

The Polyglot August 3rd 2008

Housed in the former palace of Princess Fatima El Zahra, the Royal Jewelry Museum in Alexandria is a window into a vanished world that recalls Egypt’s Belle Époque past. Begun in 1919 and completed 1923, the grand building is the perfect example of a 1920’s version of the 18th Century.

Anonymous July 31st 2008

Tala Hajjar Khalaf, PR Director for Maison Rabih Kayrouz gives a first hand account of Nhar B Saleh a one off event in Gemayzeh, which Beirut’s trend-setters can’t stop talking about.

Bringing together 10 designers and artists was a very exciting challenge.

It was the first event of its kind in Lebanon and we were all very eager to see the outcome.

One very cool competition

carole July 28th 2008

Sometimes, I wish I was a graphic designer - especially in times like this, when I receive news about the Khatt Foundation and Mosaic's "Mulsaq" competition - a wall sticker competition aimed at promoting  graphic designers from the Arab world as well as helping to develop an original visual language specific to the region, whether it be with new Arabic typos or images.
